Shelly Hummel, LMFT

Shelly Hummel is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Gottman Therapist and Workshop Leader in Wake Forest, North Carolina. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology with Honors from The University of Iowa and her Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northern Illinois University.
Shelly specializes in couple therapy and has been in practice for 20 years. She is the founder of The Align Center for Couples and Align Counseling in Wake Forest, NC where she sees couples for weekly therapy and couples intensives, which are 1-3 days of couples therapy for couples in crisis or for out-of-state clients. She is also the co-founder of Couples Workshops of North Carolina – an organization that teaches The Art and Science of Love – a Gottman Method two-day workshop for couples who wish to strengthen their relationship and for therapists who wish to experience Gottman Method Couples Therapy – a research-based therapy designed by The Gottman Institute in Seattle, Washington where Shelly frequently travels to assist as a roving therapist to support workshop participants. She has been a guest blogger for The Gottman Institute’s “#AskGottman” series and guest speaker for the NCAMFT Capital Chapter.
Shelly has been awarded the NCAMFT 2020 Vera and David Mace award for significant contribution to the field of marriage and family therapy. She was also nominated and selected as a a finalist for the 2019 Wake Weekly’s Best of the Best in Wake Forest, NC.
Shelly has previously been employed by The University of North Carolina Department of Psychiatry and Mercy Mayo Clinic of Des Moines, Iowa where she facilitated a mandated state program for divorcing parents entitled “Children in The Middle.” She regularly speaks at Hope Lutheran Church and guides the “Principles for Making Marriage Work” for which she is a certified educator. She also provides consultation to therapists on a weekly or case-by-case basis.
Shelly and her husband Joe have been married for 20 years and they have a 14 year-old daughter Sophia.
